R/C Unlimiteds Banquet a Record-Smashing Success

VANCOUVER, Wash. — The 2003 R/C Unlimiteds Awards Banquet was a record breaker Saturday, Nov. 8 at the DoubleTree Hotel-Jantzen Beach (Portland Ore.).
R/C Unlimiteds celebrated its 30th year of racing during the event.

The banquet, planned and managed by NOSLEN Communication Services, drew a record number of attendees (68) and raised an additional $500 through a silent auction, a first for the club’s banquet. As a result of the silent auction, R/C Unlimiteds was able to make a charitable donation to the Susan G. Koman Foundation for Breast Cancer Research.

“I’ve been to 30 of these banquets over the years, and this one was the best,” said R/CU Founder Roger Newton. NOSLEN Communication Services produced two PowerPoint slideshows that were presented during the affair.

The event was emceed by club Chairman Don Mock. David Williams, executive director of the Hydroplane And Raceboat Museum (HARM) in Seattle, was the guest speaker.

“It was nearly a full year of preparation and planning, but the end result was fantastic,” said NOSLEN Communication Services President Nelson Holmberg. “We were very proud of the event we coordinated for our clients. It was a very popular dinner.”

Established in 1974, R/C Unlimiteds is a group of hydroplane enthusiasts who race 1/8th scale radio controlled models of unlimited hydroplanes of the past and present. The propeller-driven boats are approximately two feet wide by four feet long. The drivers use 11 cubic centimeter marine inboard engines that produce around three horsepower. The club’s top boats travel at speeds nearing 60 miles per hour. More than 100 club members race over 125 different radio controlled unlimited hydroplanes ranging from the 1954 Miss Cadillac to the latest 2003 Miss Budweiser. The club runs a 15-race circuit throughout Washington.
