Superior Racing Team Ready for 2005 Season
EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Despite missing the 2004 Freedom Festival, this southern-Indiana city is still one of Superior Racing Team's favorite places to visit each summer.
As the team makes its return to the 2005 Chevrolet Freedom Festival in Evansville, it comes ready to begin an exciting season.
“We are really looking forward to coming back to Evansville,” said Superior Racing Team Owner/Driver Dr. Ken Muscatel. “Last year we simply weren’t ready for the season to begin. This season is a different story, though. We’re ready and waiting for the season to start.”
While Muscatel and the U-25 team enjoy Evansville and the Freedom Festival every time they come to Ohio, it’s been since 2002 that the team last made the final.
The U-25 and its transporter are already making their way across the country, and expect to be in Evansville by Wednesday night or Thursday morning.
This season’s schedule begins with a new governing body, which provides for loads of enthusiasm and hope for the future of the sport.
The birth of the American Boat Racing Association (ABRA) is part of the reason for the anticipation. Muscatel was instrumental in forming ABRA, and is one of the behind-the-scenes people involved in the pursuit to make the sport's new governing body a total success.
“We're really looking forward to the new season,” Muscatel said. “The race sites and the owners are more directly involved in running the series together, and we all excited about the direction we're going.
“As for our team, we're ready to get racing. It's been a long offseason, but we're looking forward to the summer of 2005.”
Another part of the positive outlook is the work that was done to the boat during the offseason. Crew Chief Roger Newton and team member Jay Leckrone, along with help from the rest of the volunteer crew, made significant changes to the U-25 — most notably the paint job. The black hull with white flames is gone, and a design that includes red, black, and yellow replaces it. Checkered flags on the deck near the transom are a nice addition.
Team members also re-aligned the shaft log, gear box, moved the motor back nearly three feet, changing the hull's center of gravity with hopes to help it fly across the water better, and built a new, lightweight cowling.
“We should be pretty competitive this year,” Muscatel said.
Superior Racing Team was formed in 1992 and is based in Burien, Wash., a suburb to the south of Seattle. Muscatel is the sport's only owner/driver, and enjoys a career as one of the region's top forensic psychologists.
