Offseason Work Done to the U-25 Hydroplane
SEATTLE, Wash. — Here is a brief rundown of the work completed during the winter of 2004-05. The team's all-volunteer crew, led by Crew Chief Roger Newton and crew member Jay Leckrone (a former crew chief himself), completed all of the work.
• Moved the motor and gearbox back nearly three feet, changing the center of gravity to improve the way the boat “flies” over the water;
• Reset and align the stuffing box and strut;
• Built a new, lightweight cowling;
• Straightened the canoes;
• Rebuilt the canopy;
• Rebuilt turbine engines;
• Rebuilt gearboxes;
• Typical winter maintenance (including removal, cleaning and routine maintenance of all parts);
• A new paint job for the boat;
• Painting the trailer; and
• Routine cleaning and maintenance of the transporter and trailer.
All of the chores that were done on the boat are expected to improve the performance of the U-25, which has gradually gotten faster over the last few years. Last season, the boat was a factor in many preliminary heats during the Tri-Cities and Seattle races.
