Brandt wins second straight Atomic Cup

KENNEWICK, Wash. — Dave Brandt (Kennewick, Wash.) has a tendency to not give up the home course advantage very easily — especially in the Atomic Cup.

Brandt won his second straight — and third in four years — R/C Unlimiteds Atomic Cup on Sunday, April 3 at Two Rivers Park. It was also Brandt’s 31st career victory, tying him for third on the club’s all-time wins list with club founder Roger Newton (Renton, Wash.). Brandt drives a model of the 95 PICO American Dream.

The championship heat of this year’s Atomic Cup, which helped celebrate the 40th year of hydroplane racing in the Tri-Cities, was all about Kennewick as each of the four drivers who finished the winner-take-all final were from the race’s hometown.

Bill Brandt (Kennewick, Wash.) was second, running his new 93 The Tide. Last season’s R/CU Rookie of the Year, Scott Meyers (Kennewick, Wash.), was third with the 94 Miss Exide, while longtime R/CU member Troy McIntire (Kennewick, Wash.) was fourth with the 76 Olympia Beer. Lee Robertson (Shoreline, Wash.) failed to finish with the 93 Miss Budweiser, as did Jeff Heimkes (Ellensburg, Wash.) with his 82 Executone, and Don Mock (Seattle, Wash.) with his 84 Atlas Van Lines.

It was the sixth running of the Atomic Cup. Brandt also won the George Stratton Memorial trophy, by scoring a perfect 2,000 points during the race.

McIntire and Curt Anderson (Richland, Wash.), won the consolation finals.

By scoring 1,400 points, Mock also eclipsed the quarter-million career points mark, and extended his lead in the club’s career points standings.

The next stop on the 2005 Oh Boy! Oberto Championship Series is the Apple Blossom Regatta, April 16-17 at Crescent Bar Resort in Quincy, Wash.

R/C Unlimiteds is a racing club affiliated with the American Power Boat Association (APBA). The club’s nearly 100 members race radio controlled, 1/8-scale models of unlimited hydroplanes that duplicate the real hydroplanes as closely as possible. The models are nearly four feet long and two feet wide, and travel at speeds between 50-65 miles per hour. The club is in its 32nd season of racing.

The Oh Boy! Oberto Championship Series is R/CU’s 15-race schedule, which includes races in locations all over Washington State, and beginning this year with two races in Molalla, Ore. Oberto Sausage Company (Kent, Wash.) is the organization’s title sponsor.
